What is NUCCA and how does it Help Me?

NUCCA refers to the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. NUCCA is a specific approach to chiropractic care that focuses on the alignment and adjustment of the upper cervical spine, particularly the atlas vertebra (the first vertebra in the neck) The goal of NUCCA chiropractic is to address misalignments in the upper cervical spine, which may have a cascading effect on the entire spine and nervous system.

What does a NUCCA chiropractor do?

NUCCA chiropractors use a precise and gentle adjustment technique to correct the misalignments in the upper neck. These adjustments are often done with the patient lying on their side, and the chiropractor makes precise and controlled adjustments to restore proper alignment. The objective is to promote better overall health and wellness by ensuring that the nervous system functions optimally.

What symptoms can NUCCA help with:

  • Neck Pain: NUCCA chiropractors often work with patients who experience chronic or acute neck pain.
  • Headaches and Migraines: Correcting upper cervical misalignments may alleviate tension-type headaches and certain types of migraines.
  • Vertigo and Dizziness: Some patients report a reduction in episodes of vertigo and dizziness following NUCCA adjustments.
  • Back Pain: While NUCCA focuses on the upper cervical spine, some individuals have found that it positively affects their overall spinal health and may help with lower back pain.
  • Sleep Disorders: Improved spinal alignment can have positive effects
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Some studies have suggested that NUCCA care may help lower blood pressure in some patients, although further research is needed to confirm these findings.
  • Sciatica and Nerve Pain: By addressing misalignments in the upper spine, there may be improvements in nerve function that positively affect conditions like sciatica.
  • Overall Well-Being: Some people report feeling a general sense of well-being and reduced stress after NUCCA adjustments.

Because of the unique anatomy of the craniocervical junction (where your head attaches to your spine), a special type of adjustment is needed to get the best correction. Utilizing the NUCCA x-ray analysis Dr. Norris determines how to best do this adjustment, based on your individual misalignment and anatomy, and then takes a follow-up x-ray to determine whether the adjustment was accurate and successful, and if there is anything he can do better.

The NUCCA adjustment is proceeded and followed up by three objective tests every time. A para-spinal thermal scan, a leg length discrepancy measurement, and an anemometer reading (a specialized device for measuring postural shifts throughout the spine, as well as a bilateral weight scale). These tests show Dr. Norris if you are holding your alignment and if you need an adjustment, or not, without having to take an x-ray after the initial follow-up x-ray.

NUCCA is not just for neck pain and headaches. Patients have seen amazing changes in migraines, vertigo, Meniere’s disease, numbness and tingling, posture, post-concussion symptoms, mild TBIs, neurodegenerative disorders, and more!
